PSSA promote R/C model flying at Woodford Wings & Wheels Event
On Saturday and Sunday 11/12th July 2026 a group of PSSA members once again promoted our Association (and R/C modelling in general) at the annual Woodford Wings & Wheels event hosted by the Avro Heritage Centre in Cheshire.
The team arrived early on the Saturday morning and working together ably pitched 2 large gazebos, one of which had been borrowed from the BMFA along with their superb R/C flight simulators which were active and in use all weekend!
With base all set up we rigged and showcased a wide range of our PSS models, many subjects with links to Avro history such as the Lancaster, Vulcan and Nimrod, and we attracted a huge flow of people (particularly on the Saturday when the show was really busy!) to the stand who could learn about our hobby and the Association’s activities.
James Archer had brought along a box full of free flight chuck gliders which the younger children loved colouring in to their own design before assembling and flying them! Older kids and adults enjoyed the BMFA R/C flight simulators which proved really popular and gave our team something to entertain themselves with too in moments where we weren’t talking to the public.
The weather was superb both days and on site there was plenty to explore, with a huge array of classic cars and motorbikes, aircraft cockpits and replica aircraft as well as the Avro museum and its usual exhibits such as the Vulcan, Shackleton, VC-10, Nimrod, Anson, 748 and Lancaster. There was also a mixed array of model shops, aviation clothing, artisan craft stalls, local services, food and drink, live bands and local radio! Sadly the BBMF flypast scheduled for each day did not take place due to aircraft availability, which was a shame as this is always a highlight.
A huge thanks to all who travelled and took part in pulling this showcase together, with special thanks going to Dave Gilder who led the organisation and acted as first point of contact with both the Avro Heritage group as well as the BMFA both before and after the event. It was a hot and sticky weekend and delivering an event like this is no mean feat!
