May 20th/21st Dambusters Fly-In to take place from North East slope above the pier
Important Notice – PSSA Event 20th/21st May 2023
We’re on the final run up to this weekends PSSA Fly-In and Dambusters 80th tribute and we’ve been watching the weather carefully all week!
I’m afraid the winds aren’t ideal for us in either strength or direction – and with the light North Easterly winds now looking settled we will be running the event from the site above the pier by the dry ski slope.
This means we will not be parking or meeting in the usual ‘Tank Track’ car park. Instead, please park in the left hand Ski Centre car park which can be found at the top of the road up through Happy Valley gardens, the road opposite the Grand Hotel entrance (ie – don’t take the Marine drive coastal road.)
You can rig models in the car park and walk with them up the path to the slope – its about a 15 minute walk – and not suitable for large models due to overhanging trees and a gate halfway up the path.
If you are rigging and flying large models please approach the slope from a different car park. From town, instead of turning right at the island to pick up Marine Drive (or Happy Valley), turn left onto Church Walks and then take the first right hand turn (at The Empire Hotel) onto Ty-Gwyn Road. Follow this road up towards the tram station.
Just before you reach the tram station you will cross a cattle grid, take the IMMEDIATE right hand turn at the cattle grid and follow the lane taking the right hand fork – you can park cars/vans on either side of the track somewhere near the cable car pylon. Please do not block access to the road as there is a farm at the end of the lane. Bigger models can be rigged here and you can walk Easterly to the slope edge from there with no climb and no gates or obstacles – again its about a 15 minute walk from the car to the slope.
The latest forecasts are suggesting both Saturday and Sunday will see NE winds of around 8-10mph (which should be a little stronger on top of the Orme)– so for now its likely both days will be run from the same NE slope above the ski centre.
If anything changes we will post more details on the PSSA Facebook page and Group page – please check back! All other event details remain unchanged from those advertised on the PSSA website.
A final reminder that inline with the latest wishes of the Great Orme Warden and Conwy Borough Council only Silent Flight is allowed on the Great Orme, electric models can no longer be operated.
