Forecast for the Lleyn MAC 2-day 'Fly For
Fun' event looks promising! |
At this range the forecast
looks most promising for this weekends planned event upon the Lleyn
peninsula, with 'more than adequate' winds blowing from the SW.
As is tradition, we will
meet in the Londis Car Park at Llanbedrog for 10am each day and a
notice will be placed on the phone box for latecomers stating where we
are flying once the decision has been made.
PSSA member Tim Mackey
has kindly produced a most useful spreadsheet (giving each slopes GPS
coordinates for Sat Navs) and a road map showing all the sites used by
the Lleyn MAC
(linked here with permission - many
thanks Tim) relative
to the Llanbedrog meet point.

Persistence on the Great Orme pays off - but
for 1 day only! |
Light winds from the North
meant that only electric models could be flown upon arrival at the
Great Orme on 11th June - but conditions improved in the
afternoon to allow good PSS flying, first from the NW slope then later
off the preferred Westerly. Poor forecast led to few in
attendance, so no formal event was staged, but those who travelled were
rewarded with clear blue skies and perfect PSS conditions between 2pm
and 8pm.

October Great Orme Event brings 2010 PSSA
season to a close. |
|

Matt Jones' Vulcan in action! |
|
Held in ever
changing conditions on the South facing slope of the Great Orme,
the 3rd and final PSSA Fly-In for 2010 proved a well attended
event on Saturday 2nd October. Sadly the
opportunity to fly on Sunday was lost due to inclement weather,
but Saturday saw all models take to the sky and the PSSA Battle
of Britain tribute was flown as planned. |

video from this, the final PSSA Fly-In for 2010 can be seen

OCTOBER 2nd & 3rd
Great Orme, Llandudno |
With September 2010 seeing the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of
Britain, we are planning to stage a PSS tribute at our next event to
mark this occasion in our own style!
The plan is to stage a
mass launch and flypast(s) of as many Spitfires, Hurricanes and
Messerschmitts as we can muster at some point each day over the weekend
of 2nd/3rd October, our final PSSA event on the Great Orme for
2010.
Of course the rest of the
weekend will run in the usual Fly for Fun format, but please dig out
your PSS Battle of Britain warbirds for this event and bring them ready
to fly in this tribute attempt. "Tally Ho!"

With sincere thanks... |
|
The PSSA has been
contacted by Alan Hulme's daughter Jayne, expressing the
family's thanks for the messages, cards and letters received
from PSSA members and flyers around the country following Alan's
death in January. |
|
Jayne and Alan's
wife Margaret would also like to thank those who attended the
funeral service held for Alan in his home village of Waverton on
20th January.
At the service,
Alan's Grandsons paid fitting tribute to his love of flying with
a wreath representing the Boeing Stearman, his favourite type
having flown them for real during his air force training. |

In memory of Alan Hulme.
It is
with great sadness I have received news that Alan Hulme, the founder of
the PSSA has passed away in the early hours of 5th January, having lost
his ongoing battle with cancer. He died peacefully in his sleep at
Chester Hospital. His daughter Jayne and his grandchildren are
with Alan's wife Margaret at this time.
Alan was an active modeller since his childhood - across all divisions
of our hobby from rubber powered free-flight to modern day EDF - over
the past 24 years he has provided an immense amount of drive and
enthusiasm for Power Scale Soaring in the UK.
Having founded the PSS
Association in 1986 he went on to compile, edit and publish the
quarterly PSSA magazines for many years and has designed and published
plans for a vast number of successful PSS models, ranging from the
Mustang to the Folland Gnat.
Alan could be found at the majority of PSS events up and down the
country and was actively flying and coordinating events up until
late Summer 2009 - at the Lleyn Peninsula and on The Great Orme, two
places that were very special to him.
Alan will be sorely missed by all who knew him and our thoughts are with
his family at this time.
The following video is a tribute to Alan Hulme. |
