The Panavia Tornado Collection

The Tornado has been modelled many times in the UK since an original plan was drawn up by Andy Conway in the mid eighties.  Over the years, plans have been improved and refined - and other designers have tried their hand at this type.

Low level bombers and high-speed interceptors - here are just a few examples of Tornados built for the slope!

Terry Lidstone now owns and flies this fine example of the Tornado F.3 built originally from the Conway plans by Andy Blackburn.

The Wing section has been modified by Andy to Eppler 205 on which it flies very well in good lift.

2-Ch RC controls ailerons and the all moving tail.

Andy Ward has built this Panavia Tornado GR1 from the Richard Green plans.

Model spans 53" and has an AUW of 3lb.  It is constructed using a balsa sheeted foam wing and conventionally built up balsa fuselage and tail.

It uses 2-Channel RC to control ailerons and elevator.

Nose detail on the Andy Ward Tornado - finished in a Gulf War desert scheme complete with 'Sharks Mouth'!

This airborne shot of Andy Conway's latest Tornado F3 model shows the afterburners off to good effect!

Model finished in the colours of 56(F)Sqn with a red tail and spine.

Andy Conway built a swing wing version of the model, finished as a German airforce IDS variant.

Here you can see Andy holding the model at the Llandudno meet and checking the swing-wing alignment prior to another mission with the Tornado.

Andy Blackburn built this example of the Conway Tornado F.3 as his first ever PSS model.

Model was finished in Solartex and car primer spray paints, resulting in a high AUW and a wing loading of over 17oz/sq ft.

Andy altered the wing section from plan to Eppler 205.

Another early example of Andy's original Tornado design - this time built and flown by Phil Cooke.

Again, the model was finished in the colours of the Panavia Tornado F-2 demonstrator

Phil is seen here with his model at the Leek and Moorlands PSS event in 1988.

Andy Conway holds aloft his original Panavia Tornado design.

This early model was finished to represent the Tornado F-2 prototype.  The design has since been refined and increased slightly in scale.

The latest model spans 48" and uses ailerons and elevator control (fully moving tailplane as per the full size.)  The plan is available from the PSSA plans service.
