The N.A. P-51 Mustang Collection

Some aircraft are popular in all divisions of modelling, the P-51 Mustang is one of them and this certainly reigns true in PSS.  Here are a few examples of this popular subject, as you will see it is modelled in various marks, scales, colourschemes and materials!

Martin Middleton holds his Durable Aircraft Models P-51 Mustang aloft for the camera.

The model has been modified and finished as 'Strega' - the aircraft that won Gold prize in the 2008 Reno races.

The model spans 66" and has an AUW of 6.5lbs.  Martin has fitted flaps to the wings which he mixes with aileron for effective 'crow' braking on landing.

North American P-51D Mustang, built from the Modeltec kit by Steve Kemp.

The model spans 50" and weighs 34 oz ready to fly, giving it a wing loading of just under 12 oz/sq ft.

Model is covered in a mixture of Solarfilm and Solartex, with Humbrol enamel details.

Superb detail on the 1:12th scale P-51D Mustang built by Steve Griffiths.  

Designed jointly by Steve and Andy Blackburn, this model spans just 40", uses the Selig S3021 wing section and has an AUW of just 23.5oz.  This gives it a light loading of around 10.5 oz/sq ft!

Model is finished in Profilm with Solartrim details.  It uses 2 Ch radio for elevators and ailerons.

North American P-51B Mustang "Gladys" designed and built by Alan Hulme.

Model spans 44" and uses 2 channel radio controlling ailerons and elevator.

It is made from balsa and white foam and weighs 2.75lbs.

The more conventional P-51 in silver is built by Simon Cocker.  Both models are made from white EPP and weigh in at 6lbs.  The models are to be fitted with the AIRWARS Infra-red combat system for dogfighting sessions on the slope.

N.A. P-51D Mustang built from the Vortex models EPP kit by Terry Lidstone.

Model spans 60" and weighs 5lbs - giving it an impressive performance.

The EPP foam is covered with Pro Trim/Film

North American P-51D Mustang, built from the Modeltec kit by Andy Blackburn.

The model spans 50" and weighs 35 oz ready to fly, giving it a wing loading of just 12 oz/sq ft.

It's finished in silver Profilm with the decals and markings made from Solartrim.

Vortex Vacforms N.A. P-51D Mustang, seen here with builder Stuart Macpherson.

This 60" span model is made from EPP with a balsa tailplane, fin and spinner.  It has an AUW of just under 4.5lbs ready to fly and is controlled with 2 channel R/C.

Model is seen here still awaiting invasion stripes on the wings and the all important pilot figure!!
