with his Vulcan

With a total of 5
events planned throughout the year, the 1st RVMSA PSS event
of 2008 went ahead on Sunday 23rd March! It was touch
and go for a while - after the heavy downfall of snow the
night before, so we started the event a bit later than
scheduled at 12.30pm. We headed up to the 'bomb hole'
site where it was blowing a steady but chilly 10mph, but the
lift was poor, and this wind soon had quickly swung round to
the north, so we all packed up and headed over to the 'north
wall' site (a 15 min walk.) Here it had picked up to between
12-15mph with great lift creating perfect PSS conditions!
The stone wall gives you great shelter so the day turned out
to be brill with a bit of sunshine thrown in to boot!

We
had 4 pilots flying PSS models on the day, they were
Andy O'Neil, Ron Davis, Ian Benson
and myself.
Ron's DH-88 Comet racer
favoured the good lift and was looking great against
the blue sky and white snow. I also had my
L-39 Albatross out having only flown it once
before, which also enjoyed the good conditions.
|
There was only one
slight mishap on the day and that was Andy's Spitfire
(blue foam and brown paper construction) which had a run in
with the wall - not too much damage - just broke the spinner
off! Ian's Avro Vulcan also enjoyed the good
lift - so much so that he almost 'specked out' at times!

Weighing in at only
34oz, my NA P-51 Mustang, along with Andy's little
Aermacchi also gained great height in the smooth lifting
air and looked great in the crisp blue skies! The
event finished around 3.15pm every one being happy with the
afternoons flying and also to escape the snowfall which we
could see heading our way!
