Ribble Valley MSA PSS meet - 27th June 2004

Report by Mike Briggs

Magnificent PBY-5 Catalina built and flown by Jack Edwards

After our drive over from Baildon, we were greeted by Simon upon our arrival at the Nick, with good news of a westerly wind in the region of 12-15 mph.  We therefore assembled our models and made our way up to the slope followed by other PSS and sport fliers.  The weather was fine and sunny, unusual for Pendle on our last few visits.

Jack Edwards brought his Zlin and superb Catalina flying boat constructed from white foam, balsa-clad fuselage, and built up wing using blue foam ribs.  Sporting free-wheeling props, the Cat is an excellent flier, and deservedly won Best Prop category.

Alan Hulme double checks his trims prior to a Learjet launch at Pendle

Ian Benson, a regular Pendle flier, flew his Ron Collins designed F-86 Sabre; Steve Kemp was flying a F-22 built by Jack Edwards.  Andrew O’Neill flew three models; a Galaxy Whirlwind (electric), a YT International Me-109 of 45" span, and a Yak-9 from the Paul Janssens plan.  Steve Griffiths took Best Jet with his FJ-4B Fury and also flew his own design P-51D Mustang and P-40 Kittyhawk IV.  I myself flew my BAe Hawk 200 and Albatross L-59.  Alan Hulme arrived later in the morning with his Learjet and an ex-Janssens Macchi-202 Folgore.

The lift was patchy close in at times, but better further away from the slope.  Many thanks to the Ribble Valley MSA for running the fly-in.
