WMSA Crook Peak Fly-In - 12th June 2005

Report by Terry Lidstone

This year at Crook Peak the PSS event was the best ever - ten aircraft were entered in total by nine participants.  The wind was westerly, ideal for our best slope which overlooks the M5 out towards the Bristol Channel where sea breezes augment the prevailing wind, and it proved to be ideal for the day... At last!

Bristol airport were reporting 12 knots and so it proved on the peak.  The models flew beautifully and showed to all assembled exactly what PSS is all about.  To cap it all it was warm and sunny and the views from the Peak were marvellous.  It's a pity there were not more flying pictures taken on the day!

Colin Wavell was thrilled to have won the Best Prop prize, his first ever success, he said.  Let's hope it encourages him to enter every year along with his chums.  Apart from his very nice models he is an excellent photographer and has always come up with a very good pictorial record of the events.

This year each participant had a 5 minute solo slot to demonstrate the aircraft to its best.  This seemed to work very well and it allowed everyone to view each flying slot.  The manoeuvres were selected from two groups of choices on the day, but there is no reason why a pre-prepared and well practiced sequence shouldn't be tried.  Free flying was allowed before and after static judging but very few pilots were willing to risk their models before!!

After the one-hour PSS flying slot all aircraft types joined in and a few club members did not observe that it was a PSS fliers' day as I had asked for at the club night.  Most were very good about it though and allowed us the use of the front of the face without too much chance of being sideswiped by a foamy.  In fairness, those that were guilty of hogging the front of the slope were not at club night and would not have heard my request, and on the day I was far too busy enjoying my Andy Blackburn Jet Provost that I forgot to repeat it.  Next year maybe, it will all be right.

The awards went to the following;

Best Static Prop Model Colin Wavell N.A. P-51D Mustang
Best Static Jet Model Terry Lidstone BAe Jet Provost T.3
Best Flight Andy Blackburn Mikoyan MiG-19
PSSA Southern Area Trophy Andy Blackburn Mikoyan MiG-19
